U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s views on the Israel-Hamas war are the mainstream among Michigan Democrats, according to a new poll.

Lake Research Partners, a Democrat polling firm, found 71 percent of Michigan Democrats support a “ceasefire” in Gaza by Israel (including 53 percent who “feel that way strongly”), while just 9 percent supported Israel defending itself after the Hamas terrorist attack October 7. Twenty percent were undecided.

Tlaib has called for a ceasefire and declared the pro-Hamas chant, “From the river to the sea,” is merely an “aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate.”

Michigan Democrats opposed sending aid to the Israeli military, 51 percent to 31 percent in favor, the firm said on Monday.

Younger voters and Arab and Muslim voters were overwhelmingly opposed to more aid, 73 percent and 92 percent respectively, according to the survey.

President Joe Biden’s handling of the crisis is proving perilous for his future political prospects.

“Young voters and Arab and Muslim voters report strong dissatisfaction with the President’s job performance handling the Israel-Palestine conflict (73 percent and 93 percent say ‘just fair’ or ‘poor’, respectively),” the poll found.

According to Lake, young and Arab/Muslim voters were key to Biden’s 2020 victory and they may turn on him if he sends aid to Israel.

President Biden’s “hard re-elect” is under fifty percent among younger Democrats (41 percent) and stands at a paltry 9 percent among Arab and Muslim Democrats. Sixty-five percent of Arab and Muslim Democrats now say they think they will vote to replace Biden.

Among Arab and Muslim Michigan Democrats, Biden is in second, trailing Independent Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., 24 percent to 16 percent. An unnamed third-party candidate comes in with 12 percent while Trump gets 11 percent.

According to the poll, 62 percent of Arab and Muslim Democrats would be more likely to vote for Biden if he called for a ceasefire, as Tlaib is demanding.

If he sends aid to Israel, 57 percent of young voters and 82 percent of Arab and Muslim voters said they would be less likely to vote for the incumbent.

Michigan is home to an estimated 240,000 Muslims. Biden won Michigan by 150,000 votes in 2020, according to certified results.
