Michigan Democrats are doubling down on their claims that Ruby Garcia’s murder was due to domestic violence rather than another of a series of criminal acts committed by an illegal immigrant.

Although Garcia was likely in a relationship with her killer, there are plentiful examples from throughout the nation where the illegal immigrant murderer did not know his victim.

Garcia’s killer, Brandon Ortiz-Vite, was initially in the U.S. under former President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. He was deported to Mexico because of criminal activities during former President Donald Trump’s administration but snuck back into the U.S., where he shot and killed Garcia on Friday, March 22, dumped her body adjacent to US 131 in downtown Grand Rapids, and stole her car.

Many of Michigan’s Democratic politicians have been silent about Garcia’s murder but began speaking out on social media to counter Trump’s Tuesday comments on Garcia and crime committed by illegal immigrants.

Trump appeared in Grand Rapids on Tuesday to tout his policies on border policing and illegal immigration, using Garcia’s murder as an example of why his tougher policies would save lives from criminal acts committed by undocumented migrants and overdose deaths from smuggled fentanyl, methamphetamine, and heroin.

Michigan’s Democrat Attorney General Dana Nessel took to X to express her party’s narrative that Ortiz-Vite’s status as an illegal immigrant is only coincidental to the fact he was allegedly Garcia’s boyfriend who killer her in an act of domestic violence.

“Donald Trump sure as hell doesn’t care about the life or death of Ruby Garcia,” Nessel said, after listing several Trump administration policies and actions, including his three U.S. Supreme Court nominations, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barret, and Neil Gorsuch, who were crucial to the SCOTUS Dobbs’ decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.

“Donald Trump didn’t care about domestic violence when he celebrated his judicial appointees overturning Roe v. Wade, ensuring that women who were raped or impregnated by domestic abusers had to carry those pregnancies to term, share custody with their abusers, and sometimes lost jobs because of it,” Nessel said.

State Sen. Dayna Polehanki shared Nessel’s X post, adding a comment on Trump: “He lies as he breathes.”

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, who is running to replace retiring Democrat U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, posted on X: “Donald Trump didn’t come to Michigan out of concern for Ruby Garcia. And despite all the tough talk from him and his allies, it’s very clear that he’s not actually interested in fixing the southern border.”

None of the women addressed any of the other crimes in the packet Trump’s campaign distributed at his Grand Rapids appearance, which cannot be mischaracterized as incidents of domestic violence. These U.S. residents murdered by illegal immigrants include a 22-year-old Kent County woman, Leah Gomez, who was shot to death while sitting in her car with her one-year-old daughter with special needs; Laken Riley, the 22-year-old Georgia nursing student who was brutally murdered by an illegal immigrant in February; sixteen-year-old Texas cheerleader Lizbeth Medina, who was stabbed to death by an illegal immigrant; Nazareth Claure, a 31-year-old mother in New York who was beaten by a baseball bat and hacked to death by a machete by MS-13 gang members in 202; and Maria Gonzalez, a 12-year-old Texas girl who was raped and killed by an illegal immigrant.

Approximately 70% of Americans disapprove of President Joe Biden’s handling of the border.

Joining Trump on Tuesday were many law enforcement officers, including Police Officers Association President James Tignanelli, whose union endorsed Trump in 2016, 2020, and again in 2024.

“The open border is … I don’t understand it you know,” Tignanelli told The Midwesterner. “I don’t know what you could tell me that would make it good that other people that can come in here without impunity [who are] turned loose from jails and other places. I don’t know where they come from but they’re all illegal when they come.”
