Michigan House Majority Floor Leader Abraham Aiyash, an outspoken critic of President Joe Biden, will not run for re-election, according to the Michigan Secretary of State.

The Secretary of State’s 2024 Michigan Candidate Listing shows Aiyash, a Democrat currently representing the 9^th House District in Wayne County, quietly withdrew his candidacy in the 7^th House District on April 9. Aiyash’s district was reconfigured through redistricting, with Democratic House Speaker Joe Tate now running in District 9.

The reason behind Aiyash’s decision is unclear. A message The Midwesterner left with his office was not returned. Political insiders speculate Aiyash, the state’s top Muslim lawmaker, may be reserving his time in the Legislature for the Senate as new term limits approved by voters in 2022 restrict lawmakers to a total of 12 years in either chamber.

The Hamtramck lawmaker is a leader in an “uncommitted” movement to deny President Joe Biden a second term without a call for a permanent ceasefire for the ongoing war between Hamas and Israel.

The movement, along with a related “Abandon Biden” campaign, secured over 101,000 uncommitted votes during Michigan’s Democratic presidential primary to send a message to the Biden administration that “we are going to not support any effort that is supporting a genocide and that we’re going to stand firm and, hopefully, allow this administration to change course before the November election,” Aiyash told Democracy Now.

That movement has since swelled to more than 500,000 voters across numerous states that will send a total of 20 delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August with no obligation back the president, though Biden has already secured enough delegates to ensure his nomination.

Aiyash was among five state lawmakers from across the country who trekked to Washington, D.C. in November to participate in a hunger strike and pressure the Biden administration into calling for a ceasefire, Michigan Advance reports.

“I’m a Muslim, so 30 days a year I fast from sunrise [to] sunset — no food, no water,” he said ahead of the trip, referring to the traditional fast during Ramadan. “So this is not a new phenomenon for me. I have some experience in fasting, but this is the first time I’d be doing a political hunger strike to send a message.”

While the four-day hunger strike obviously failed, the 30-year-old has since dialed up the rhetoric against Biden while pushing back on bipartisan legislation in support of Israel.

“We’re talking about Joe Biden,” Aiyash told his supporters toting Palestinian flags ahead of the February Michigan presidential primary, according to Politico. “He stood with no spine and did not demand peace for the Palestinians, did not demand peace for the Israelis – but instead, continues to fund genocide.”
