Pro-Hamas protestors sent a message to U.S. Rep. Shri Thaneder over the weekend, scrawled on the side of his “community center” in Detroit.

“My community center this morning,” Thanedar posted to X on Monday alongside images of the vandalism.

The pictures show the word “RACIST!” spray painted in red over the center’s sign that features an image of the Indian American congressman. Thanedar’s picture was decorated with a red X over his face, and devil horns coming out of his head.

A mural featuring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcom X was left unharmed, as was the mural’s message: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Other graffiti included the words “CEASEFIRE” and “Free Palestine” on other exterior walls, as well as a Palestinian flag.

Thanedar described the damage, which he believes occurred on Sunday, as “very upsetting” in an interview with The Detroit News.

“I’m always open for dialogue, and I’ve had many phone calls, in-person meetings and town halls,” he said. “I’m open to talking about this and working on it, but this is not going to gain sympathy for their cause.”

Thanedar, a first term Democrat, has been a vocal supporter of Israel following Hamas’ attack on the country last year, though he has more recently called for a ceasefire and the release of all hostages from both sides, according to the Hindustan Times.

Thanedar told the Detroit Free Press he plans to contact Detroit police about the vandalism, noting “it’s not just an isolated incident.”

Pro-Hamas protestors disrupted a holiday party for supporters in December that resulted in one woman with a broken nose. They also showed up outside his home several months ago at 3 a.m., honking horns, shouting through a megaphone, and knocking on his door, he said.

The pushback forced Thanedar to leave the Democratic Socialists of America, he told the media.

“Hurting people and vandalizing is not going to help,” he told the Free Press. “We have differing opinions and those need to be handled in a democratic way.”

The graffiti at the community center is only the latest in targeted attacks from pro-Hamas protestors in Michigan in recent months. Beyond widespread protests and vandalism on the state’s university campuses, police have investigated anti-Israel vandalism at Knollwood Country Club in West Bloomfield, the Michigan vacation home of former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and Jewish businesses in Detroit that support Israel.

Anti-Israel activists are also targeting President Joe Biden, securing more than 101,000 “uncommitted” votes during Michigan’s democratic presidential primary. That “uncommitted” movement, along with an aligned “Abandon Biden” campaign, have since amassed well over 500,000 “uncommitted” votes across the country to send a message to Biden: call for a permanent ceasefire and halt all military aid to Israel or it’s no vote come November.

Thanedar, meanwhile, is running for a second term in Congress and facing primary challenges from former Detroit state Sen. Adam Hollier and City Councilwoman Mary Waters.

Thanedar filed a challenge last week to disqualify Hollier from the ballot based on shady signatures on Hollier’s nominating petition that included Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.
