A Charlevoix County man faces up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine after police allege he stole 72 signs promoting former President Donald Trump in Antrim County.

Charlevoix County Prosecutor Christopher Tholen told WPBN the unidentified 27-year-old was arrested for larceny and lodged in the Antrim County Jail, and he plans to follow up with charges of concealing stolen property.

“What it appears they were doing is trying to inconvenience people, harass people, or intimidate people,” Tholen said, “and that’s what’s egregious about this situation.”

The case stemmed from several thefts reported in Antrim County that led one homeowner to take matters into their own hands.

“After reporting one of these thefts a homeowner placed an Apple ‘AirTag’ into a replacement sign and a camera was installed over the area of the sign,” Tholen said.

That sign was stolen on Monday, and police on Tuesday tracked the AirTag to a residence in Charlevoix County, where they served a search warrant and discovered a total of 72 signs “all advocating for the same presidential candidate,” the prosecutor told WPBN.

“The resident of that home was found to drive a vehicle that matches a vehicle shown on camera stealing the campaign sign,” he said.

Authorities did not name the candidate, but the news site aired photos of the Trump signs.

As police were at the man’s home, his aunt arrived and allegedly told police she suggested the sign stealing as a joke, MLive reports.

“She was interviewed by police and stated that she had told the man she would pay him $10 for each sign he took that belonged to the presidential candidate,” Tholen told WPBN. “She claimed that this was a ‘joke.’”

Antrim County Sheriff Steven Huch told the news site there’s been an increase in political sign thefts.

“The past 29 years that I have been here, it does appear that this seems to be a lot more larceny of political signs than the recent years in the past,” he said.

Huch said the suspect was arrested and criminal charges are pending in Antrim County.

Steeling or defacing political signs is a misdemeanor with a potential penalty of 90 days in jail and a $500 fine, WILX reports.

The Tuesday arrest came as another Charlevoix County resident faces larceny charges for allegedly stealing campaign signs from a residence near Walloon Lake in September, when a passing motorist took a picture of the woman’s vehicle.

“A motorist saw the person taking the signs and was able to take a picture of the license plate,” Tholen told WPBN. “An then from that license plate, police were able to identify the person who was seen taking the signs.”

Tholen did not reveal who the signs supported.

“I get it. People’s feelings are run high about political candidates, and people may not like to be flooded with that other person’s name,” Tholen said. “Doesn’t mean that you should be taking other people’s property”

The woman, who was not identified, now faces a misdemeanor charge.

Elsewhere in Michigan, attempts to steal political signs supporting Donald Trump have come with deadly consequences.

An 80-year-old Trump supporter in Hancock was targeted by a vandal on an ATV who pulled up Trump signs as he set them up in his yard in July.

When the man put them back, the driver returned and ran the man over, sending him to the hospital with a critical brain bleed. The incident was one of three involving politically motivated vandalism that also included vehicle tires with the valve stems snapped off and smashed windows for folks who support Trump and law enforcement.

Police later received a message from the 22-year-old suspect, who stated they wanted to confess to the crimes, and asked to “send someone to pick me up,” WLUC reports.

Hancock police and Houghton County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the suspect’s residence in Quincy Township on July 22, when they found the 22-year-old dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, along with the ATV and clothing the suspect was wearing during the crimes.
