With bipartisan support, the Michigan legislature last month passed a $126 million bill for school safety and a mental health initiative, which was signed into law last week by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
Although members of both parties supported the $125 million HB 5503, Rep. Jaime Greene, R-Richmond, accused the Democrats of engaging in “damage control” as they try to win back the education establishment ahead of the 2024 election after the Democrat majority legislature slashed public school funding by $300 million earlier this year.
In a press statement Whitmer said the “bipartisan bills will help us build a brighter future for Michigan by making key investments in our schools, students, and teachers.”
Whitmer also claimed that the new money will make a “real difference in people’s lives.”
“It shuts them down,” Weiss said, alluding to the effects of a lack of therapy at school.
Still, behind the vague language of the left lies a potentially more partisan agenda. Mental health providers throughout Michigan rely on a strict credentialing system that channels mental health providers through programs that reinforce the state’s agenda.
The Michigan Department of Education even has a School Safety and Mental Health Commission, which claims to “strengthen the mental health of school-aged children, adolescents, and their families.” The Whitmer-appointed Commission is occupied largely by career bureaucrats in the education and mental health industries.

Despite the troubling patterns emerging in the mental health industry, few Republicans seem to be aware of what is happening.
Republican Sen. Joe Bellino of Monroe, for instance, praised the bill, which received widespread support, for protecting the “mental well-being” of students.
Still, some Republicans, Greene included, recognized the left’s maneuvering as an attempt to make amends with those in the education and mental health industries ahead of the 2024 election.
“This isn’t a win for Michigan families,” Greene noted.
