A new poll shows U.S. Rep. John James in a virtual tie with 2022 Republican gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon for the party’s candidate for governor in 2026, while U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg leads Democrats.

James, R-Shelby Township, garnered 28% support and Dixon earned 27% in a poll conducted by Mitchell Research & Communications on Monday that involved 709 likely voters. Former car dealer Kevin Rinke, who lost to Dixon in the 2022 Republican gubernatorial primary, received 3% support, while former Michigan House Speaker Tom Leonard and state Republican Senate Leader Aric Nesbitt received 0% support, according to the Michigan Information & Research Service that sponsored the poll.

On the Democratic side, Buttigieg, a former mayor of South Bend, Ind. who moved with his husband to Michigan in 2022, led with 38% support among those polled, followed by Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson at 18%, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan at 3%, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson at 2%, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II with 2%, and Royal Oak state Sen. Mallory McMorrow at 1%.

A total of 41% told pollsters they were “not sure” about the GOP nominee, while 36% said the same of Democrats.

Dixon, a former steel executive and mother of four daughters, won all but three counties in the 2022 Republican gubernatorial primary, garnering roughly 200,000 more votes that Rinke, her closest competition.

The poll results showing Dixon in a virtual tie with James comes as the latter blankets Metro Detroit with millions in campaign ads in his bid to hold onto his 10th Congressional District seat in a rematch with Democrat Carl Marlinga, the New York Post reports.

Other results from the MRC poll show former President Donald Trump leading Vice President Kamala Harris 49%-48% in a two way race, and both tied at 47% in an eight-way race. The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.68%.

“When the question mentions that Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has endorsed Trump, he polls at 52 percent compared to Harris’ 44 percent in the eight-way question,” MIRS reports.

“That Trump and Harris continue to be statistically tied is further evidence of how tight this race ultimately is going to be,” Steve Mitchell, president of MRC, told the new site.

Kennedy received support from 2% of those polled, while Green Party nominee Jill Stein and Libertarian Chase Oliver were both at 1%.

In the race to replace retiring Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, the MRC poll found Democratic U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin leading Republican former Congressman Mike Rogers by 5 points, 49%-44%.

Slotkin received support from 95% of Democrats, compared to 87% support among Republicans for Rogers. Independent voters favored Rogers 45% to 42% for Slotkin.

Those results come despite Slotkin raising nearly five times as much as Rogers with a $23.5 million campaign warchest. While Rogers has only raised about $5.5 million, the Washington Examiner reported Tuesday about $30 million from conservative super PACs were reserved for the former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee in recent days.
