Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel believes President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to deport criminal illegal immigrants will “make our communities less safe.”

In a Sunday post to X, Nessel attempted to explain her twisted logic on why she opposes Trump’s promise to launch the “largest deportation effort in American history” when he takes office in January.

“It’s a numbers game,” she posted. “There are only so many federal agents and financial resources,” Nessel posted, along with a video of her recent appearance on MSNBC. “If law enforcement resources are redirected to target people without legal status, it will reduce efforts to go after violent criminals and will make our communities less safe.”

She elaborated in the video.

“Irrespective of what your opinion is about ensuring that you’re detaining undocumented people, the concern is that a lot of those people, while they might be here illegally – and that in and of itself it’s a crime, it’s a federal misdemeanor – but when you decide to use your resources to capture those individuals, as opposed to going after murderers and serial rapists and human traffickers, we’re making our communities a whole lot less safe by doing that,” Nessel said.

It’s unclear whether Nessel doesn’t understand Trump’s plan, or she’s intentionally gaslighting her followers about what it means.

Tom Homan, a decorated former border agent Trump picked to lead his immigration enforcement efforts, has repeatedly said the scale of the deportations “depends on the resources we’re given,” noting Congress “is going to have to give a massive amount of detention beds.”

He has also promised a “targeted” approach that prioritizes national security threats, migrants with criminal histories who are already detained, and “fugitives” who have already been ordered removed by a federal judge, ABC News reports.

“If you’re in the country illegally, you’re in violation of law, so you’re not off the table, but we’re going to prioritize what we do,” Homan told NewsNation.

“It’s not going to be a massive sweep of neighborhoods, it’s not going to be massive raids,” he told Fox news. “It’s going to be a targeted enforcement operation.”

“We have a mandate,” Homan said. “I think the American people just gave President Trump a mandate. That’s why he’s elected, to secure the border, save lives and deport people, especially national security threats and public safety threats. So if you’re not going to help us, step aside, but don’t get in our way, because there will be consequences.”

Regardless, Michigan Democrats, including Nessel, are backing legislation that would provide driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, despite overwhelming opposition from an incoming House Republican majority.

That effort, which Nessel, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer have promoted since 2019, would expand on existing incentives to attract “newcomers” to Michigan, including Whitmer’s Newcomer Rental Subsidy program, $738,000 to “support newcomer integration” through grants to “ethnic and community based organizations” that cater to immigrants, $1 million in legal aid for “asylum seekers,” and $6.4 million in expanded Medicaid services for immigrants in the current budget.

Republicans attempted during this year’s budget debate to ensure tax dollars do not flow to folks in the country illegally, but Democratic majorities in both chambers blocked the proposals.

Data released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in September revealed the agency has more than 662,000 illegal immigrants on its docket with criminal convictions or pending charges, including more than 13,000 convicted murderers.

The vast majority of those illegal immigrant criminals are not detained and are free to roam the country, including 162,231 convicted of assault, 56,533 with dangerous drug convictions, 5,797 convicted of fraud, 18,234 convicted of larceny, 15,811 convicted of sexual assaults, 14,301 convicted of burglary, 13,423 with weapons convictions, 10,031 convicted of robbery, 9,461 with non-assaultive sexual convictions, 2,521 kidnappers, and 217 convicted of extortion.

In 2024 alone, illegal immigrant criminals in Michigan have been arrested or convicted of a murder in Grand Rapids, multiple sex assaults in Ann Arbor, a fatal Grand Rapids hit-and-run, soliciting sex from minors in Shiawassee County, sexual conduct with a 16-year-old Livingston County girl, breaking into a home in Sturgis to molest two girls under the age of 13, burglaries in Troy, a sexual assault in Macomb County, stealing iPhones from porches in metro Detroit, and other crimes.
