An illegal immigrant from Chile faces multiple criminal charges for her alleged involvement in home invasions targeting high-end homes in Oakland County.

Novi Police arrested Vania Herrera Valdes, 21, for home invasion and resisting arrest following a police chase last Monday that stemmed from a reported home invasion on Equestrian Trail, WJBK reports.

The arrest followed at least eight burglaries at high end homes in the area over the prior week. Authorities believe the crimes involve highly trained crews of transnational gang members working together.

“Without the community’s help, I don’t think we would’ve caught these guys,” Novi Police commander Jason Meier told the news site. “She initially gave us false information, but we were able to get assistance from our partners in immigration and customs who positively identified her as a Chilean national who was in the country illegally.”

A homeowner called police around 7:19 p.m. as he witnessed four suspects steal a safe, watches and other valuables on surveillance camera.

Police patrolling nearby responded and found a rental van with out-of-state plates leaving the scene. Police attempted to pull the van over, but the driver fled, according to CBS News.

“The vehicle actually fled from them and a short pursuit ensued,” Meier told WJBK. “At some point, the suspect vehicle pulled into a neighborhood and stopped, and four individuals bailed out of the car.

Valdes was the only one caught, despite an extensive search involving multiple police agencies, The Detroit News reports.

Police recovered a safe stolen from the home, and Valdes was booked into the Oakland County Jail with a $100,000 bond and a court appearance set for Dec. 18.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said Valdes entered into the U.S. using a Visa Waiver Program, then overstayed. Bouchard has repeatedly pointed to the Visa Waiver Program as a major driver of numerous thefts in the region tied to transnational gangs, and has called on federal lawmakers to crack down.

“When we’ve got 100% of the people that we’ve caught for high-end burglaries with the same MO all coming from that program, that tells me there’s a problem,” Bouchard told WJBK.

It was a year ago Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced charges against three Chilian nationals for breaking into high end homes in Oakland, Wayne, and Kent counties, and the problem has only gotten worse.

Bouchard and other downstate law enforcement again raised the alarm last week following eight home invasions in seven days, including some homes that have been hit more than once.

They involve crews of three to five from countries including Chile, Columbia, and Venezuela who use alarm system jammers, drones, tracking devices and other high-tech equipment to break into luxury homes virtually undetected.

Recent targets include homes in Oakland Township, Rochester Hills, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Novi, and other communities, Bouchard said. The thieves have stolen millions in jewelry, cash, watches, purses, and other expensive goods.

“They’re back with a vengeance,” he told WXYZ. “Obviously, different crews because some of those crews are still in jail.”

“We had some pretty good arrests and charges and took a number of teams off the street and out of commission,” Bouchard told WJBK. “But the problem is there are more teams coming in, and intelligence suggests over 100 teams just from Chile are doing these crimes across the country.”

Valdes’ arrest follows just a couple weeks after numerous homes were targeted in Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills, Square Lake, and Turtle Lake in late October and November.

Those thefts occurred just over a month after Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Victoria Valentine sentenced two of five suspected illegal immigrants involved in a home invasion in Troy over the summer.

Other illegal immigrants were busted in June for their alleged involvement in an organized retail theft ring that plundered tens of thousands of dollars in merchandise from grocery and clothing stores in Auburn Hills and Bloomfield Township.

Three Romanian women were transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody following their June 13 arrests, while another avoided apprehension.
