Traverse City Democratic state Rep. Betsy Coffia is going nuclear on President Donald Trump.

Fresh off her failed effort to secure driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants during Democrats’ lame duck legislative session in December, Coffia has turned her focus to denigrating the 47th POTUS, and her nearly 30,000 constituents who voted for the Republican Party in 2024.

“Go to hell Donald Trump,” Coffia posted to X Tuesday.

“Bullies piss me off,” she wrote. “You tell the American people you’re gonna bring down price of eggs, housing, that you’re the answer to their prayers,” she ranted.

“Then you come in & week ONE freeze OUR money,” Coffia posted, alleging the president cut off funds for “abused children, homeless veterans, poor hungry seniors, pregnant women & infants, preschoolers from poor families, domestic violence survivors.”

“To line the pockets of your billionaire pals?” she wrote. “Go to hell Donald Trump. Americans don’t like bullies. We stand up to bullies & we win. This is our country, our home. & we won’t let you destroy our home.”

Coffia’s raging X tirade comes in response to a recent federal memo from the Trump administration pausing federal assistance programs implicated by a series of executive orders.

“Any program that provides direct benefits to individuals is not subject to the pause,” according to a White House statement. “The guidance establishes a process for agencies to work with (the Office of Management and Budget) to determine quickly whether any program is inconsistent with the President’s Executive Orders. A pause could be as short as day. In fact, OMB has worked with agencies and has already approved many programs to continue even before the pause has gone into effect.”

The statement specifically notes payments required by law are not included in the temporary pause, such as student loans, SNAP benefits, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

The pause “is expressly limited to programs, projects, and activities implicated by the President’s Executive Orders, such as ending DEI, the green new deal, and funding nongovernmental organizations that undermine the national interest,” the statement read. “Funds for small businesses, farmers, Pell grants, Head Start, rental assistance, and other similar programs will not be paused.”

Coffia was elected to replace Republican Rep. Jack O’Malley in the 2022 midterms with the help of illegal immigrants coordinated by the Rural Democracy Initiative and We The People.

“We the People built a powerful campaign where undocumented leaders who can’t vote organized their families and friends who could to cast their ballot for Coffia—who had been organizing in the community for 10 years and standing up for working people time and again,” according to a “grantee spotlight” on the RDI website. “Coffia won by just over 700 votes; migrant workers were critical to winning the seat that flipped the State House.”

RDI made it clear the help for Coffia’s campaign did not come without expectations.

“Undocumented people in Michigan have been fighting to win back driver’s licenses for years and knew this race was critical for determining control of policymaking,” the spotlight read.

Despite repeated rallies at the Capitol and efforts by Coffia and others to push for the licenses, Democrats failed to pass the measure with party’s first government trifecta in 40 years. Voters shifted control of the lower chamber back to Republicans in November, when Coffia won re-election with 29,243 voters casting ballots for Republican challenger Lisa Trombley.

Coffia is now the only elected Democrat north of Saginaw.

With little leverage in the minority, Coffia is now focused on thwarting Trump online, where she congratulated herself and her followers on Tuesday after a federal judge issued a temporary injunction on the president’s pause.

“Folks, thank you for making the calls!” Coffia posted to X. “A federal judge has issued a temporary injunction on this illegal Trump action until Monday.

“This is an important tho temporary win so I am asking you all to PLEASE KEEP CALLING and cranking up the pressure each day this week.”
