When it comes to places to celebrate Valentine’s Day, there’s nowhere worse than Michigan’s biggest city.

In America, the average lovebird shells out $189 on Valentine’s Day gifts, and the personal finance website WalletHub recently compared 100 of the largest U.S. cities to determine where they can get the most for their money.

“It’s common to spoil your partner on Valentine’s Day, but inflation can certainly put a damper on those plans. Fortunately, the best cities for Valentine’s Day offer a wide variety of affordable date activities, food options and places to buy gifts, so you can show that you care without breaking the bank.”

To identify those cities, WalletHub analyzed 25 key metrics, from florists per capita to forecasted precipitation to cost of a three-course meal for two. The results were arranged by overall rank, with individual rankings for budget, activities, gift accessibility, and weather.

Detroit, the only Michigan city to make the list, came in dead last, ranked well behind more exciting metropolises like Toledo, Ohio; Omaha, Neb.; and Buffalo, NY.

The Motor City’s dismal ranking stemmed in large part to its last place finish in the budget category, while WalletHub ranked Detroit 52nd for activities, 77th for gift accessibility, and 10th for weather, tied with Cleveland, Ohio.

The budget category, which accounted for half of the overall ranking, looked at factors like the cost of a meal, prevalence of nice affordable restaurants, and the average price for things like hotels, movies, beverages, beauty treatments, massages, and taxis.

A breakdown of some of those metrics shows Detroit ranked last for cost of a three-course meal for two, and 97th for jewelry stores per capita.

Despite Detroit’s less-than-romantic ranking, plenty of places in the Motor City are promoting unique experiences to celebrate the day of love.

There’s The Damage Zone, the city’s first rage room, where patrons can let out their “responsible psycho” to destroy other people’s stuff, while similar smash rooms are available at Full Throttle Adrenaline Park in Sterling Heights and Escape Room Zone in Farmington and Madison Heights, Axios Detroit suggests.

Other possibilities include a date night at the Belle Isle Aquarium, an annual Dirty Show of erotic art at the Russell Industrial Center, or the National Association of Black Journalists’ I Love Detroit “FUNraiser,” according to Outlier Media.

Still other options allow Detroiters to “do good while getting silent revenge on your ex this Valentine’s Day,” WJBK reports.

“For a $45 donation, Metro Detroit-based Happy Paws Haven Co. will name a feral cat after your ex and then spay or neuter the animal,” according to the news site. “The cat will then be released as part of the rescue’s trap-neuter-return program.”
