The President Donald Trump administration has achieved overwhelming success in securing the southern border, and Senior Advisor for Customs and Border Protection Ron Vitiello had much to say about it when he sat down with The Midwesterner on Trump’s 100th day in office.

“Simply put, the nonsense of the last administration is over,” Vitiello said, adding illegal crossings of the southern border have dropped a staggering 97%.

He said 7,000 people illegally crossed the border each day of Biden’s term. “Last night, that number was less than 300,” he said.

Vitiello suggested the massive drop in a relatively short period of time isn’t complicated.

“You have someone in the White House who wants the border secure, wants to make America safe again, and he put a team together with a lot of plans and preparation so on day one we started doing things that would affect both the physical border and the immigration system throughout the U.S.,” he said.

Vitiello told The Midwesterner some tools the Biden administration created to streamline ease of entry — such as the CPB One app — have now been reconfigured to make it easy for illegal immigrants to self-deport.

The CPB senior advisor wouldn’t speculate about why the Biden administration would allow criminal illegal aliens to remain in communities, which became evident when CPB and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) began deportations almost immediately after Trump was sworn in on Jan. 20.

“I really don’t understand the motivations, but it is destructive policy to know and understand that there are people here in the country who came illegally and committed crimes against the communities in which they live and then to ignore or not prioritize as an enforcement objective is destructive,” Vitiello said.

He predicted Michigan could see fewer illegal crossings because he argued ending the policy of catch and release will deter attempts.

“The other good news on the northern border is you have a very close relationship with Canada and for a lot of things, including the tariffs, they’ve leaned in on making sure that we both understand that shared border, what the threats are, what the traffic is like, and so there is a higher level of cooperation and a spirit of leaning in and doing more to protect both countries than I’ve ever seen,” Vitiello told The Midwesterner.

Dozens of signs line the drive near the media entrance to the White House grounds

“The individuals that are on the signs are people that live amongst us who not only came into the country illegally, which is a federal crime, but they also engaged in significant criminal activity in the United States,” Vitiello said.
