Rep. Julie Brixie, D-Meridian Township, has had her parking privileges revoked and is no longer allowed to speak on the Michigan House floor after an incident involving a parking dispute with Rep. Matt Maddock’s, R-Milford.

As reported previously by The Midwesterner, the controversy began when Brixie wrapped Meshawn Maddock’s vehicle, which was driven and parked that day by Rep. Maddock, in plastic wrap inside the Capitol parking garage. Brixie claimed her actions were a response to Maddock parking across two spaces, one of which she said was hers.

While the act itself was likely intended to be a form of protest over what Brixie perceived as improper parking, things escalated when Brixie made false claims about the car while speaking on the House floor. She told the assembly that Maddock’s car was running with the hood open and that guests in the viewing gallery could confirm it. However, security footage released by the Michigan House contradicted these statements, showing the car was parked with the engine off and the hood closed.

Speaker of the House Rep. Matt Hall, R-Richland Township, took swift disciplinary action. He revoked Brixie’s parking privileges in the Roosevelt Parking Structure and announced that she would no longer be recognized to speak on the House floor. The decision was made in the interest of maintaining order and professionalism within the legislative process.

Maddock, frustrated by the incident, suggested that the security footage could be shared with law enforcement for further review. Meshawn Maddock also weighed in, criticizing Brixie’s behavior on social media, calling it “juvenile” and “unprofessional.”

Brixie defended her actions, stating that she wrapped the car in response to Maddock’s parking habits and denied any ill intentions.

However, the incident has sparked broader discussions about professionalism in the Michigan Legislature, raising concerns about the impact of misinformation and the consequences of such actions in a political environment. As our elected officials, we expect them to behave professionally and to be focused on running the state with the people’s best interest in mind, and not to be concerned with fighting over parking spaces.
